James received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry/chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He did his undergraduate research in the laboratory of Weiping Tang, where he studied the organic synthesis of carbohydrate derivatives. James was a research technician in the Tagliabracci Lab for four years prior to joining as a graduate student.

In his free time, James enjoys running outside, playing chess, and watching science documentaries.
